A number of Members of the European Parliament (MEP) on Wednesday (May 31) booed when the president of the institution, Antonio Tajani, said the U.S. would withdraw from an United nations agreement on fighting climate change sealed in Paris in December 2015.
Some MEPs applauded when Tajani made the announcement at the start of a plenary session in Brussels, but loud boos could be heard in the hemicycle and dominated the MEPs' reactions.
Tajani said he would discuss a joint action plan with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk.
President Donald Trump will follow through on a campaign pledge to pull the United States out of the pact, a source briefed on the decision told Reuters, a move that promises to deepen a rift with U.S. allies. But Trump, who has previously called global warming a hoax, did not confirm the decision in a post on Twitter, saying only, "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days."
A U.S. decision to withdraw from the accord could further alienate American allies in Europe already wary of Trump and call into question U.S. leadership and trustworthiness on one of the world's leading issues.
The EU Commission had said earlier in the day that a withdrawal by the United States from the Paris climate deal would be disappointing but the European Union stood ready to take global leadership on the issue. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
