- Story Text: Cambodian opposition party leader Kem Sokha joined thousands of his supporters on Friday (June 2) afternoon in the last rally ahead of local elections on Sunday (June 4).
Stressing how important these local elections were, Kem Sokha rallied with his supporters from a truck in a parade of motorcycles that filled the streets with excited cheering supporters. The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is expected to improve its showing in these communal elections, and Kem Sokha has been campaigning in all 25 provinces.
The June 4 local election is seen as the biggest challenge Prime Minister Hun Sen and his ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) have faced in nearly four decades after narrowly winning the last election in 2013 - their worst election result since Cambodia returned to full democracy in 1998. The hotly anticipated national election next year could extend Hun Sen's more than 30-year rule or make way for a new era of leadership by the CNRP in Cambodia - one of Asia's poorest countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
