- Story Text: A judge about to sentence fugitive cocaine baron Pablo Escobar on murder conspiracy charges was killed by sub-machinegun fire in Medellin on her way to work on Friday (September 18).
Two bodyguards and a driver also died in the attack on 38-year-old Judge Miriam Rocio Velez Perez, who was rushed to a local hospital where she died shortly afterwards.
Hours before the murders, police and army units had launched a series of raids on houses in the wealthy Envigado area of Medellin in a major new hunt for Escobar and his gang.
Sources at the local prosecutor-general's office said Velez Perez was to sentence Escobar in the next few days over the 1986 murder of Guillermo Cano, editor of a Bogota newspaper that waged an outspoken war on the drug traffickers. Velez Perez was the third judge to be murdered while working on the case.
Escobar escaped from jail in July during a bungled operation to transfer him to a more secure prison. - Usage Terms/Restrictions: NONE
