- Story Text:At least 14 people, including 10 police officers, were killed by a car bomb in the Colombian city of Medellin on Thursday (December 3).
Police believe the Medellin drugs cartel, led by fugitive Pablo Escobar, planted the bomb as a reprisal for last week's killing by police of a senior cartel member.
Officials said they had received anonymous phone calls earlier in the week threatening a terrorist attack in retaliation for the death of Medellin hitman Johnny Rivera in a shootout with police.
Rivera was one of eight men to escape from jail with cartel leader Escobar in July. Police blamed Rivera for committing numerous terrorist attacks and murders.
The car bomb, made up of 120 kilograms (270 pounds) of dynamite, was detonated near the Antanasio Girardot sports stadium in Medellin's western suburbs; 19 people were injured and the bomb caused extensive damage to 14 shops.
A report on state-run RCN radio said Escobar was believed to be planning the murders of at least 350 police officers before the end of the year and was offering 2,100 United States dollars for every one killed. - Usage Terms/Restrictions: NONE
