JIM KERR STARTS: HOW IS THE TOURì GOING SO FAR? re: ...so enjoyable. We came hereì expecting alot actualy, because people have ravedì to us that you're going to have a good time andì the audiences will be great and it's a beautifulì country etc... ...and we certainly have not been in anyì way let down, so when we say it's a pleasure to beì here we realy mean it. SIMPLE MINDS HAVE BEEN TOURING ABOUT 18ì YEARS - DO YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO MOTIVATEì YOURSELVES ESPECIALLY FOR A WORLD TOUR? I think a few years back we're finding aì little hard to motivate, as much as we love ofì what we do, but I believe anything if you do itì night after night you don't get the sameì perspective and the same thrilles... ...and I think the good point the goodì thing about the phase we're into now is that weì had a long break between this tour not just aì break fisicaly sense, but is was three or fourì years between tours. ...but the side effect that things feelì fresh again and we have perspective again and theì fact that we love doing this we realy missed it,ì it means that we didn't need any other motivationì other than trying to give people a great night,ì that's enough motivation. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GOING BACK TO SCOTLAND? ...funny, Scotland usualy...comes at the start ofì the tour, but this time we've been out nine monthsì before we went home, well what can I say: it'sì just another country, it's home... ...going back, it was a laugh actualy,ì and good time and with so many relatives andì friends some we we're not always happy to seeì [SMILE], but they are family... THE GIGS THAT YOU PLAY WERE ALOT SMALLERì THAN THE BIG CONCERT - DO YOU PREFER INTIMATEì GIGS? ...I think any band worth their soul shouldì be able to play in this room should be able to doì it, should be able to play in a rugby stadium... ...the real difference is to do withì technicalities in terms of production, you needì alot more tricks... ANY AWFUL NIGHTS IN SA YET? None YOUR "MANDELA" SONG - YOUR ANT-APPARTHEIDì CONCERTS - MADE A REAL DIFFERENCE TO BRING ABOUTì CHANGE HERE? ....I hope if it even made a small difference,ì then that would be great, but no, it would be tooì much to deal with if we think we did this andì that. We're talking about a struggle that'sì been on for how ever many years...were there'sì alot of pain...for us to write a song and play andì think that, would be very pompous. But I think we certainly got alot ofì credit and I think there was alot of people outì there that didn't get credit poets etc... ...people change the world - musicì doesn't, but I think art including music has aì great galvanise thought in opinion. SIMPLE MINDS HAS PLAYED IN ALOT OFì BENEFIT CONCERTS - DO YOU MIND BEIN KNOWN AS Aì BENEFIT MAN? ...we had a album at the time calledì "Streetfighting years", the songs wereì anti-appartheid, Belfast...for a time it was a bedì we maid and we had to iron it... ...but I think to us it wasn't even to beì directly political...it was more wrighting songsì about the world around you...it wasn't saying weì have the answers...it was more perhaps askingì questions... WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BRITISH MUSICì SCENE AT THE MOMENT? It's very vibrant and there's alot of names comingì through and recognition...but I have not heardì anything "new"...but there is good musicians and Iì think they'll grow hopefully. DO YOU FEEL UNDER PRESURE - BECAUSE IT'Sì BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU'VE HAD A BIG CHART HIT INì THE UK? We didn't before the album came out...weì were a bit disappointed, we thought "Hypnotised"ì would be a smash and everyone tells us it's aì smash when hear it - see that's a "smash" song... ...but to have a "smash", you need soì many things in timing and momentum, and we'd beenì away a long time... ...the real challenge coming back was theì re-establish, and that definately happened. We're under tremendous presure internalyì because we wanna become better songwriters andì make better records and we wanna be betterì performers and when you feel like that the otherì presure can - it goes without saying. WHAT DO YOU WANT - HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUTì YOURSELF RIGHT NOW? WHAT'S IT LIKE BEING MARRIED TO PATSY ISì IT PUTTING ALOT OF PRESURE ON YOU? DO YOU LIKE HER FILMS? DOES SHE LIKE YOU MUSCI? WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU'RE GOING TOì CARRY WITH YOU AFTER THIS TOUR ONE THING THAT'Sì GOING TO STICK IN YOUR MIND? We've only been here for a few days, we've madeì some friendships that I think will continue... ...but what we'l carry over and aboveì anything else is the overwelming desire to return, and that can't be bad END OF INTERVIEW CONCERT AT STANDARD BAND ARENA: ON STAGE GV'S CROWDS GOING CRAZY JIM ON STAGE CU JIM SINGING GUITARIST CHARLIE - GUITAR WS STAGE MARK - DRUMMER KEYBOARDS
