INTERVIEW: LEGOTLA PADI [MAMELODI INUMERATOR CO-ORDINATOR] AND INUMERATORS WALKING STREETS OF MAMELODI
07.56.29 WHAT MAKES CENSUS 96 SO MUCH MORE SPECIAL? It's the first in the post-Apartheid era...it's the largest logistical operation in the country...touches on everyone in the country...
07.56.58 ...essentially it is a nation-building excercise because South Africans will reflect themselves in numbers it will be SA standing in a mirror and looking at itself i.t.o numbers - how big we are as a nation; what are the qualities of the population itself
07.57.19 It also removes the vestiges of Apartheid, 9 provincial governments and 1 country that is united...
07.57.44 There will be new information i.t.o gaining knowledge of how many South Africans are there - that in itself is new...info relating to the characteristics of the population...development information...helpful for planning...
07.58.45 DESCRIBING KIND OF INFORMATION EG AGE GENDER OCCUPATION
07.59.08 ...reflecting on that battery of information ine can say we have info that we can use for planning and especially for small areas, 'cause when you plan for a school you don't really plan for the whole nation you plan for a particular community...
07.59.50 RE THE HOMELESS PEOPLE - NO PROBLEMS...the homeless people have been the most cheerful lot...thus far they have been the most supportive group...seen the most depressing conditions under which children live...
08.00.52 ...the statistics that we collect have had this human element....the collection of statistics has to have this human face as well...
08.02.01 Yes we ask race but we ask what the person conceded? himself as....obviously there people who will find it intrusive...we have to have an understanding of what Apartheid did to this country and we can only know it by classifying the population by race...it makes demographic sense to analyse information by race...race is a component of our past that we will take ages to forget about...
08.02.57 RE PROJECTIONS - WILL HAVE COVERED 95% OF COUNTRY - 5% WILL DRAG ON UNTIL THE 31 MAYBE UP TO 15TH OF NOVEMEBER...in general I think the volcano has erupted and its flooding down the hill...ISOLATED AREAS OF PROBLEMS - NEGOTIATION
08.03.40 ...the critical problem is really around unemployment. People have understood the Census to be an employment generating activity...90% of the people that we have deployed are unemployed, 10% are employed and there's reason why we have employed people because they have the resources to move around...
