- Story Text:France celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Gay Pride Parade with thousands marching down the streets of Paris on Saturday (June 24) celebrating sexual diversity and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer (LGBTQ) community.
Onlookers lined the streets applauding as participants marched, danced and sashayed through the capital.
The rise of the far-right during the French presidency during the second round where centrist Emmanuel Macron faced off with far-right leader Marine Le Pen had the LBGTQ community fearing repercussion and having to face a step back in the same sex marriage law.
Although Macron has not expressed his opinion on the subject, Charles Monroe, a self-described "Sunday Drag-Queen", says he is furious that Macron's political party was present at the parade, as the current Budget Minister tweeted in 2013 his opposition to same sex marriage.
In March 2013, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Paris to protest same-sex marriage.
France became the 14th country to allow same-sex marriage in April 2013 after parliament approved a new law championed by former President Francois Hollande.
Since then, same-sex marriages have been celebrated across France. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
