- Date: 10th July 2017
- Summary: **** WARNING CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY **** (SOUNDBITE) (French) INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT, THOMAS BACH, SAYING: "It would be a wonderful moment to celebrate France's unique Olympic legacy 100 years after the Paris 1924 Olympic Games. But we are in sport, and as the President knows very well from his personal experience, in sport there is always competition." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (French) INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT, THOMAS BACH, SAYING: "Los Angeles and Paris are two wonderful towns in countries which have a long Olympic history. The two cities both drew on the spirit of the 2020 Olympic Games in their candidacies. In line with the 2020 agenda, Los Angeles and Paris plan on using a record number of existing and temporary sites. That's just one of the ideas we have not yet ever seen in the history of the Olympic Games." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (French) INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT, THOMAS BACH, SAYING: "If I can say so, Mr. President, Paris' 2024 candidacy is 'On the Move'." - Story Text: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (July 10) said the Paris 2024 Olympic bid team had learnt from "past mistakes" at a joint news conference with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach in Lausanne.
The IOC will hold a meeting on Tuesday (July 11) where it is expected to ratify an executive board recommendation to award both the 2024 and the 2028 Games at the same time, ensuring both candidates host one Games.
However, the IOC would still have to decide who goes first, and the two candidates are lobbying intensely to try to get the 2024 Games they originally bid for.
Macron's presence on Tuesday is an unusual move. Heads of state generally turn up only for the host city vote, which this year will take place in Lima, Peru, on Sept. 13.
