- Story Text: Awards in the main categories at the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei were swept by Chinese nominees on Saturday (November 26). Honours for both best male and female lead actor, best director and best feature film were all given to Chinese movies.
Movie stars from the Mandarin speaking film industry walked the red carpet in front of Sun Yat-sen Memorial in Taipei, posing for cameras in designer dresses and greeting their shouting fans who took the opportunity to get close to their idols.
This year already marked the 53rd installation of the awards ceremony which was first held in 1962. The Golden Horse Awards is considered the most prestigious film award in the Chinese-speaking movie industry.
Juliette Binoche, who was one of the presenters at this year's event, was among the stars to walk down the red carpet.
Chinese actor Fan Wei won best lead actor for his performance in the movie "Mr. No Problem" in which he plays a farm manager in the rural China of the 1940s.
"We filmed our movie in a very slow-paced way and the consensus that was reached between actors and director was also very slow-paced. Actually it was an unfavorable situation, but (I am) very grateful that all the judges showed great patience and attentiveness so they discovered the subtleness behind our slow approach. I am very grateful (for this). So again, I want to thank the Golden Horse Awards, thank you," he told reporters after receiving his award.
The award for best lead actress was shared by Sichun Ma and Zhou Dongyu, for their co-performance in "Soul Mate", in which they compete for the same man. In contrast to the movie's script, the two actresses said they had a strong connection and want to work together again in the future.
"I am grateful for my last name; my last name is Ma (Chinese character for 'horse'). So I think I have a special connection with the Golden Horse (Awards). I also think that me and Dongyu are a very good fit, we have a lot of energy. So I think we should work on more movies together, because I think we have a special spark together. If I'm not there then she is also not there," said Sichun Ma, after kissing her co-actress on stage.
Chinese director Feng Xiaogang told reporters he decided to take a different approach when filming "I Am Not Madame Bovary", for which he won best director, a risky decision that paid off.
"I had hoped to approach the filming of this movie with the emotion similar to what (the astrological sign) Virgo (stands for). It was a learning process. But I didn't know if this was the right thing to do, because many of my very good friends were opposed to me using this kind of method while filming. But today, the Golden Horse Awards gave me an answer, saying that I did the right thing," he said.
"The Summer Is Gone", directed by Zhang Dalei, picked up the night's biggest award for best feature film and awarded 10-year-old actor Kong Weiyi, who won the award for best new performer, with a strong start into a possible future career.
"This movie was really a joint effort by everyone. When thinking now about what troubles we had while filming, of course there were hard times, there were hard times every day. But (I) can't remember what those were. I can only think of the emotional connection between everyone and what it felt like to finish (the movie) together. This I still remember. But the actual hard times I can' remember," said director Zhang Dalei. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
