- Story Text: Hollywood veteran Robert Redford is celebrating his 80th birthday.
The actor is currently back on the big screen in the critically-acclaimed "Pete's Dragon," a remake of the 1977 Disney movie of the same name however, this time movie features a computer-generated creation of the dragon named Elliot.
Redford, best known for films such as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Out of Africa," is showing no signs of slowing down or retiring.
Born in Santa Monica, California on August 18th, 1936, he was a terrible student who was thrown out of university after a year and half.
The actor made his first on-screen appearances in a range of television shows including "The Twilight Zone" and "Perry Mason."
After having appeared in a number of stage productions in New York, his big screen breakthrough came in 1967 with a role in "Barefoot in the Park" starring opposite Jane Fonda.
In the years that followed, Redford cemented his stardom with roles in classic movies such as "The Sting," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Candidate," "The Way We Were" and "All The President's Men." In 1980 he won an Academy Award for his directorial debut, "Ordinary People." He has been nominated for an Oscar four times in his career but that is his only win to date.
His career continued to flourish throughout the 1980s and 1990s with roles in the likes of "Out of Africa" and "Indecent Proposal." In 2002 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 74th Academy Awards.
As well as being known for his environmentalism, he used the millions he made at the box office in the 1970s to launch the influential Sundance Institute and Festival in support of independent filmmaking long before small and quirky films were fashionable. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
