- Story Text: Locals assessed the damage left in the wake of the wildfire that had ravaged forested areas in Croatia's southern Adriatic coast on Wednesday (July 19).
The wildfire which started on Sunday (July 16) evening, helped by unusually strong winds, swept through areas near the major city of Split on Monday (July 17), threatening houses in villages and at one point even reaching the eastern outskirts of the city.
By Wednesday most of the fire was put under the control of hundreds of fire-fighters and army personnel, allowing locals to face the damage wrought by the fire.
A Dalmatian county official said local authorities would classify the event as a natural disaster, allowing them to ask for government help in assessing and repairing the damage of the fire which destroyed some 4,500 hectares of pine forests and bushes, as well as about a dozen stranded cars. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
