- Story Text: Former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra appeared at the Supreme Court on Friday (July 21) ahead of the last witness hearing of a lengthy trial on charges of mismanaging a multi-billion dollar rice subsidy scheme.
Yingluck, whose government was ousted in a 2014 military coup, faces up to 10 years in jail if found guilty of negligence over her role in the rice program. Yingluck and her Puea Thai Party say the trial is politically motivated and aimed at discrediting the party's populist policies, which had helped Shinawatra clan win every election since 2001.
Yingluck was greeted by hundreds of supporters, many of whom were teary-eyed and gave her flowers as she entered the courthouse. Supporters have called for a fair trial.
Three witnesses are expected to testify at the hearing, according to Yingluck's team. The court is expected to announce a verdict at the end of the two-year long trial. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
