- Story Text: Portugal's Civil Protection National Authority (ANPC) announced on Thursday (July 27) that a multi-front forest fire that began in Serta on Sunday (July 23) had been contained, Portuguese media reported.
The blaze began in Serta in the centre of the country and spread to the municipalities of Proenca-a-Nova and Macao in Castelo Branco and Santarem districts as high temperatures and wind hampered firefighting efforts.
So far this year, forest fires have burned 75,264 hectares, an area which surpasses any amount over the same period in the past decade, ANPC said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
