- Story Text: Hundreds of Palestinians gathered outside the old city of Jerusalem before dawn on Thursday (July 27) to celebrate the removal of Israeli security measures from entrances to the Temple Mount-Noble Sanctuary compound, holy to both Muslims and Jews.
Muslim worshippers have been holding protest-prayers outside the holy site and clashing with Israeli security since Israel installed new security measures around al-Aqsa compound, following the shooting to death of two policemen at the holy site, in violence that touched off the bloodiest clashes between Israel and Palestinians in years.
On Wednesday (July 26), Israel removed the metal detectors from the entrances to the compound in hope to calm days of unrest, but Palestinians have said the modified measures are still unacceptable.
The dispute, like many in the Holy Land, is about much more than security devices, taking in issues of sovereignty, religious freedom, occupation and Palestinian nationalism. Muslims refer to the compound as the Noble Sanctuary while Jews call it the Temple Mount. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
