- Story Text: North Korea denounced the latest United Nations sanctions imposed on the isolated state, saying they infringed on its sovereignty, according to the North's official news agency on Monday (August 7).
The government statement reiterated Pyongyang's stance that it will never place its nuclear programme on the negotiating table as long as the United States maintains a hostile policy against it. It did not detail what action it would take in response to the sanctions.
The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday (August 5) aimed at pressuring Pyongyang to end its nuclear programme. The sanctions could slash North Korea's $3 billion (2.30 billion pounds) annual export revenue by a third.
The U.S.-drafted resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood following Pyongyang's two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
