- Story Text: Foreign ministers from the 27-nation ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) met in the Philippine capital, Manila, on Monday for an annual meeting.
The denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is expected to have taken centre stage this year, with the meeting taking place two days after the United Nations Security Council slammed North Korea with a U.S.-drafted resolution sanctioning exports in a bid to pressure it to end its nuclear programme. North Korea has said it will not put its nuclear programme on the negotiation table as long as the U.S. takes a hostile stance against them.
North Korea, China, South Korea and the United States are part of the ARF, but North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson were not present at Monday's meeting.
Violent extremism and a South China Sea code of conduct were also expected to have been discussed during the ARF, which brings a series of multilateral forums hosted by the 10-nation ASEAN to a close. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
