- Story Text:Voters in Kenya's largest slum Kibera came out early to cast their ballots on Tuesday (August 8) amid fears the latest electoral clash between the country's foremost political dynasties could once again descend into violence.
The close-fought election pits Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta, 55, the businessman son of Kenya's founding president, against challenger Raila Odinga, a 72-year-old former political prisoner and son of Kenya's first vice-president.
Kibera is one of Africa's oldest slums, dating back to the early 20th century, and a stronghold of the opposition. Residents are squatters on public land, living in corrugated iron shacks perched next to garbage-clogged open sewers.
Successive governments have done little to invest in the illegal and unplanned settlement or bring services like piped water, clinics and schools. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
