- Story Text: German police on Wednesday (August 9) discovered a group of migrants hiding on a freight train during searches near the Austrian border.
Seven adults and five unaccompanied minors were found hiding underneath lorries on a train travelling from Verona to Munich. They were discovered at the train station in Raubling, near the Bavarian city of Rosenheim, where groups of German police have been using a heat-detecting camera mounted on a helicopter and conducting spot checks.
With trains travelling at speeds of around 150km per hour, migrants hiding on trains face a perilous journey. One man found on Wednesday had an injured leg, and was visibly in pain and unable to walk unaided.
Many of the migrants were dressed only in shorts and t-shirts, and were found shivering. A police spokesman said the emergency services had been called for suspected cases of hypothermia.
The migrants told authorities they were from Somalia, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.
The police spokesman said the number of people found hiding on freight trains had gone up in the past several months, from 20 in the first half of the year to 100 in July alone. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
