- Story Text: When Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta secured a second term in office on Friday (August 11) he set off wild street celebrations by his supporters and protests in the strongholds of opposition leader Raila Odinga in the capital and the west of the country.
In Kisumu, an Odinga stronghold in the west, youths banged drums and tyres burned in the streets in the Kondele district.
Police were deployed throughout the night and the next day youths set fire to more tyres and laid stones to block roads with some throwing stones at the security forces.
Election Commission figures show Kenyatta winning 54.3 percent of the vote and Odinga 44.7 percent. Nearly 80 percent of the 19 million registered voters cast their ballots. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
