- Story Text: Thousands thronged to a stadium in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (August 19) for the opening ceremony of the 2017 Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games), the biggest sports event in the region.
A total of 4,888 athletes from 10 Southeast Asian nations and East Timor are set to compete in the Games, with 404 gold medals in 38 sports up for grab.
The region's best athletes include Singapore's Olympic swimming champion Joseph Schooling, Malaysian track cycling world champion Azizulhasni Awang and Olympic diving medalists Cheong Joon Hong and Pandalela Rinong will be competing in this year's Games. This is also the first time that winter games like ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating are included in the Games.
