  • Story Text: Beer drinkers in the tiny village of Clanfield, Hampshire, must rank among the most well served customers in Britain. For 75 years the 192 inhabitants had taken their drinks from the old "Rising Sun" public house, until brewers, Watney Combe Reid & Co., pulled the dilapidated building down, built foundations and them accomplished a memorable feat, May 24, by erecting a new "Rising Sun" in less than 12 hours!
    At 5 a.m. May 24, the first section of the "pub" was unloaded, and by 11.15 a.m. the last section - the saloon bar - was in position. Then internal work began, such as connecting up of pipes and placing of stocks. First pint of beer was drawn at 6 p.m. that day.

    The prefabricated "pub" - of Canadian cedar wood - was made in 12 complete sections by the Southall factory of Swiftplan Ltd. Each section was completed down to decorations, roofing and glazing. Bars and counters were installed, where possible, and electrical wiring was built in. The 12 sections were transported overnight to Clanfield on 12 vehicles accompanied by two mobile cranes for erection.

    Clanfield, without another pub, had only to wait five weeks between demolition of the old building and the speedy erection of the brand new "Rising Sun". To have rebuilt the pub in the traditional style and method would have taken about 18 months. Cost of this pub built in a day? - GBP10,000.
