- Story Text: Elephants, bicycle rickshaws and boats were the most sought-after means of transport in Lucknow, capital of India's Uttar Pradesh province, Oct 12/13, after the waters of the swollen River Gumpti swept through the city, killing more than 16 people and making thousands homeless in the worst floods for 200 years.
Flood water invaded the city's fashionable shopping centre, swamped ground floor premises and caused great distress among the animals of the local zoological gardens where only the birds seemed to take things calmly.
Electricity had to be cut off to prevent worse disaster, while army units rescued people marooned by the floods. The water level was dropping very slowly and no estimate has been made as yet of the total damage.
More than 3,000 people were reported killed, Oct 16, in a tidal wave which ravaged the mouth of the Ganges in East Pakistan. The Gumpti - or Gomati - on which Lucknow is situated, is a northern tributary of the River Ganges.
