- Story Text: EIRE'S PRESIDENT, MR.DE VALERA, PRESENTED GOLD, SILVER, AND BRONZE MEDALS TO THE PRIZE WINNERS IN THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMPETITION FOR APPRENTICES.THE CEREMONY WAS HELD IN ST.PATRICK'S HALL, DUBLIN CASTLE, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTERNOON.
TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY COMPETITORS FROM 13 COUNTRIES, INCLUDING A TEAM OF 32 FROM EIRE, TOOK PART IN THE COMPETITIONS.THE COUNTRIES REPRESENTED, IN ADDITION TO EIRE, WERE AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, BRITAIN, GERMANY, ITALY, DENMARK, LUXEMBOURG, JAPAN, THE NETHERLANDS, PORTUGAL, SWITZERLAND AND SPAIN.
THE JAPANESE SCORED THE GREATEST SUCCESSES, WINNING 10 GOLD MEDALS - IN FITTING, TURNING, MILLING, MACHINE DRAWING, GAS WELDING, ELECTRIC WELDING, PANEL BEATING, INDUSTRIAL FORGING, HOUSEWIRING, AND INDUSTRIAL WIRING; AND 2 BRONZE MEDALS.
IRELAND WON 7 GOLD MEDALS, AND GERMAN CAME NEXT WITH 5 FOR FITTING, TUNING, CABINET MAKING, BRICKLAYING, AND STONE CUTTING.THE GERMAN ENTRIES ALSO WON 3 SILVER MEDALS AND 7 BRONZE.
BRITAIN CAME NEXT IN THE HONOURS LIST WITH 4 GOLD MEDALS AND THEN CAME SPAIN WITH 3 GOLD MEDALS FOR SHEET METALWORK, MOULD-MAKING, AND BRICKLAYING.
