- Story Text: Two children have been killed in an apparent fit of
road rage in a Mexico City suburb after a man drove his
vehicle into a crowd of students during a flag ceremony.
Two children were killed and another 16 were injured
on Monday (May 6, 2002) after a man drove his pick up truck through
a school district in a Mexico City suburb in an apparent fit
of road rage.
According to witnesses, the driver, Jose Luis Nieto Avila, lives
next to the Gabriela Mistral school and had ongoing battles with
the institution regarding traffic delays during school functions.
An unidentified woman was filming the school function
when Avila drove through the grounds, running over a number of
children between the ages of three and five. Two adults were
also injured.
"You went over the line this time. I hope that now you
are finally put to justice. How you laughed at all of us and
now, you are behind bars," one mother yelled at Avila after
he was taken into custody.
Lucia Jimenez, whose daughter was injured in the incident
said that Avila had problems with the school's director and
had driven his car straight at her.
According to doctors, Avila was not intoxicated at the time
of the incident. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
