- Story Text: The award uniforms that will be worn by medal-winning
athletes from 26 different countries during the Sydney
Olympics were unveiled in New York on Monday (July 10).
The uniforms were launched in New York with a fashion
show featuring models representing the 26 countries. Each
model was accompanied by a child in that country's native
costume.
Team USA athletes bound for Sydney, from gymnastics,
fencing, boxing, weightlifting, swimming and women's soccer
were also on hand.
Shann MacMillan was one of the stars of the 1996 Olympic
Gold medal winning soccer team, she liked the design of the
U.S. uniform.
"They went for a very simple, and classy look. They didn't
want to take anything away from the medals. The stripes are
fashioned the way they are so that the medal will sit in the
middle and be the focal point - there's not too much going on
- its very simple - I'm excited about it," MacMillan said.
Adidas' product line manager for the Olympic contract,
Susan Halliday said the designs were supposed to show the
history behind the games.
"She (the designer) worked really hard to look back at old
footage, to see the history of the games that Adidas had, and
she realised it's the first games of the new millennium so she
wanted to take an old look and modernise it. Her largest push
was to keep this simple, classic, clean so it did not distract
from the moment when the athlete is on the podium accepting
there medal," Halliday said.
Also in the design for the first time, were specifically
designed uniforms for women. The design also takes into
account the five positions an athlete will take up when
receiving their medal - front, left, right arms raised and
back.
Olympic gold medal hopeful and breast stroke swimmer Ed
Moses is hoping to bring back gold.
"Just to wear this uniform and have a gold medal around my
neck and have the flag going off is an amazing feeling, it
can't get any better in sport," Moses said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
