- Story Text: Hong Kong has welcomed the Chinese New Year of the
Rabbit with a spectacular fireworks display on the waterfront.
Tens of thousands of people lined Hong Kong's
waterfront on Wednesday (February 17), to watch the annual
fireworks display welcoming the Chinese New Year.
This year is the Year of the Rabbit, traditionally a year
in which to take a leap into the future, trusting in the luck
of the rabbit that things will turn out alright.
Hong Kong has just had one of its worst years on record
with the Asian economic downturn hitting the bustling business
centre hard.
But all that was forgotten on Wednesday with a display of
fireworks designed to lift even the most depressed spirits.
China traditionally marks the New Year with fireworks --
designed to scare off evil spirits -- and Hong Kong's
spectacular displays have become an annual treat for the
city's people.
Wednesday's display was no exception - the best way
possible to make sure the New Year gets off to a good start.
