- Story Text: - INTRO: The two Russian cosmonauts who spent six long months in the MIR space station have arrived back in Moscow.
Wearied cosmonauts Vasily Tsibliyev and Alexander Lazutkin arrived in Moscow on Thursday (August 14) evening after a gruelling six month stint aboard the Mir space station.
The two men touched down in the Kazakh desert on Thursday afternoon after a successful undocking from the station and three hour flight from orbit to earth.
They underwent intensive medical checks as soon as they hit the ground and then where whisked away by helicopter to a plane bound for Moscow.
On the plane the cosmonauts feasted on a juicy watermelon and French wine and relaxed.
Tsibliyev spoke candidly about the many mishaps that occured aboard Mir during his leadership. He said that it was time that talk of who was to blame came to a stop.
The cosmonauts have endured a series of major woes since they arrived aboard Mir in February. The most serious was a June 25 collision between the station and its supply ship.
Mir has run on partial power since then. They also had to contend with a fire and a series of problems with their life support systems during their mission.
A crowd of family and friends greeted the cosmonauts turned-heros as they stepped out of the plane at Moscow's Chikalovsky airport.
The two men went directly from the airport to the cosmonaut welcoming ceremony at Star City, where they were offered the traditional bread and salt.
They will now spend three weeks recuperating at Star City's special health centre.
British-born Michael Foale and two Russian replacements, Commander Anatoly Solovyov and engineer Pavel Vinogradov, are now working aboard Mir. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
