  • Story Text: Mrs. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, appeared in court in New Delhi on Wednesday (23 August). She has been charged, along with five others, with conspiracy and criminal misconduct in procuring 139 jeeps without payment for use in her party's general election campaign in March, last year.

    SYNOPSIS: Several hundred people defied a police ban to demonstrate their support of Mrs. Gandhi, when she arrived at the Hazari Court complex, in New Delhi. Police took no action against the supporters.

    This is Mrs. Gandhi's second court appearance since she lost the general elections 17 months ago.

    The charge is virtually the same as one on which she was arrested last October and held overnight in police custody. She was released the next day because there was no evidence. This case is quite separate from the series of cases brought against Mrs. Gandhi as a result of the Shah Commission hearings into the alleged excesses of her 18 month emergency rule.

    Supporters defied the ban on slogan shouting.

    Mrs. Gandhi was granted bail of 15,000 rupees (1,900 U.S. dollars). She is scheduled to appear in court on the second of September to explain her refusal to take the oath and give evidence before the Shah Commission of Inquiry. Mrs. Gandhi has accused Justice J.C. Shah, Chairman of the Commission of being biased and therefore unable to conduct the investigations against her.
