- Story Text: Several African Heads of State and the representatives of 25 other countries paid their last tributes to Ghana's former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on Saturday (May 13) after a funeral ceremony in Conakry, the Guinean capital.
Dr. Nkrumah, who was 63, died in Rumania last month. He had been living in Guinea since he was ousted from power in a Ghanaian army coup in February, 1966, during his exile, President Sekou Toure appointed him co-President of Guinea.
President Toure, an old friend of Dr. Nkrumah's, presided over the funeral ceremony, which was watched by thousands of people. It was also attended by Presidents William Tolbert of Liberia, Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania, and Sourou Apithy of Dahomey.
Later at the 25th anniversary symposium of Guinea's Democratic Party, President Tolbert paid special tribute to Dr. Nkrumah, whom he called a "fallen hero".
Also represented at the funeral ceremony was Ghana's new ruling military body, the National Redemption Council. But in Accra, there was no word of when Dr. Nkrumah's body would be flown back for burial -- and there were some misgivings that it would not be returned by the Guineans.
