- Story Text: Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione has made his best offer yet, for the story and photos of yet another woman who may claim to be involved with President Clinton.
Penthouse will pay Monica Lewinski two million dollars if she has a story to tell of a sexual relationship with President Clinton, and if she will pose for some semi-nude photographs.
Publisher Guccione said the $2 million for Lewinsky's story, if she has one, is not extravagant because he could easily sell an extra million copies of Penthouse, with Lewinsky's story and photos in it.
Guccione's offer is good only if Lewinsky has a story "with respect to a sexual relationship with Clinton" and if she poses for some semi-nude photographs.Guccione would give Lewinsky authority to select photos for the article.
Lewinsky's attorney William Ginsburg said on television this week that the Penthouse offer is "salacious" and he would "tear it up." Guccione told Reuters Television the offer is simply a "practical, businesslike offer" that merits a response.
Guccione added that the Penthouse offer could possibly induce Lewinsky to tell the truth about her relationship with Clinton, given that she could make so much money. He guessed that an additional book deal would raise Lewinsky's take to as much as seven million dollars. However, the financial prospects might also be an inducement for Lewinsky to lie about her past, Guccione added.
Why do people want to read about Lewinsky's purported affair with Clinton? "Beats the hell out of me," Guccione said with a laugh."I don't think it (the story) is wonderful, but the country does and the press does...Professionally, I'm part of the media and I've got to compete with everybody else for whatever tidbits of information I can find." Guccione said he personally believes the press and the public should stay out of President Clinton's private life. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
