- Story Text: The Middle East's main air show opened on Sunday (November 12) with some of the world's leading aircraft makers looking to the United Arab Emirates for a decision on a multi-billion-United States (U.S.) dollar deal for 80 long-range strike planes.
UAE Defence Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, flanked by other potential customers, officially opened the five-day Dubai '95 Air Show and later inspected some of the 100 aircraft on display at Dubai International Airport.
Twenty-four military and civilian aircraft took part in flying displays.
American, British, French and Russian manufacturers are waiting for an indication from the oil-rich emirates on when and where they would buy the 80 aircraft.
But official sources said the deal, possibly the 20th century's last major order, was not expected to be wrapped up during the show.
The order is expected to exceed 5 billion U.S.-dollars depending on weapons systems and the supplier.
The French Rafale prototype -- a sea and land-borne plane on show for the first time outside Europe -- is one of the bidders for the lucrative UAE contract.
The United States is bidding with a remodified model of the McDonnell Douglas Corp F-15E -- the F-15U -- and various versions of the F-16, including the remodeled F-16U.
The Russians too have an impressive line-up and are offering the UAE a "very competitive price" on MiGs and Sukhois.
