- Story Text: Ex-Nazi Grand-Admiral Karl Doenitz - last Fuehrer after Hitler's end - attended the funeral at the North German naval base of Kiel, 11 Nov, of Grand-Admiral Erich Raeder, architect of the pocket battleships and the Navy with which Germany faced the sea-power of Britain in World War Two. Raeder, a freed war criminal, died after a long illness in a Kiel hospital, Nov 6. He was 85.
Inspector of the West German Navy, Vice-Admiral Rogge, paid a graveside tribute as a personal mourner. He said Admiral Raeder "kept the Navy clean" by opposing extension to it of Nazi racial laws.
Several hundred sailors of Germany's peace-time Navy attended the funeral. After the Protestant Church service, the coffin was laid in the cemetery near to the German Navy Memorial.
