- Story Text: Rescue crews in Mexico City are working painstakingly through the rubble of a collapsed office building in the capital to retrieve six bodies trapped in the debris, nearly two weeks on after the country was left devastated by a massive earthquake.
The 7.1 magnitude quake struck 13 days ago, killing 326 people including 187 people in Mexico City, damaging 11,000 homes, of which about 1,500 will need to be demolished. The largest search and rescue effort is under way at an office building in the Roma section of Mexico City, where more than 40 people were buried.
Many of the bodies of those victims have been found, leaving rescue teams with the task of finding six bodies of people still believed to be in the rubble.
Initially, authorities had given teams 72 hours for search and rescue operations. But nearly a fortnight on and after much public criticism of coordination and budget cuts in emergency services, authorities have conceded and allowed more time to recover the bodies.
About 10 percent of damaged buildings in Mexico City were constructed after strict building codes were enacted in the wake of the devastating 1985 earthquake that killed an estimated 10,000 people. Officials have instructed prosecutors to open investigations into those structures. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
