Summary:More than one thousand people died when freak cyclones swept across southern India in 1962. This was the situation on May 26, in the state of Andrah, which suffered the worst storms for more than 20 years. The floods devastated large parts of India's rice-producing area and destroyed hundreds of villages. Roads and railways were washed away in the flooding and many localities could be supplied with food only by air.
