- Story Text: One of Germany's oldest Christmas markets opened its doors in Nuremberg on Friday night (December 1) where hundreds of people had gathered around stalls outside the Church of Our Lady.
A young woman, Rebecca Amon who was dressed as an angel spoke from the church's balcony before a children's choir performed Christmas carols.
According to the city of Nuremberg, its Christmas market dates back to the middle of the 16th century.
One year after 11 people were killed in Berlin when an attacker ploughed a truck into a Christmas market, safety is an issue in Nuremberg too.
The city's mayor said that while there was no "one hundred percent" guarantee for safety anywhere, he encouraged people to visit his city.
"The police are here and we hope we don't need them," mayor Ulrich Maly told Reuters Television.
His comments coincided with reports from Potsdam, outside Berlin, where police experts made safe a device filled with nails that was delivered to a pharmacy near an outdoor Christmas market.
Germany has around 2,600 such markets, filled with sparkling Christmas trees and wooden stalls serving candied nuts, sausages, mulled wine and handicrafts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
