- Story Text: Ancient Mayan culture is being brought into the digital era after the British Museum opened its archives to Google.
The Google Maya project uses cutting-edge technology to digitally preserve thousands of Mayan artefacts in order to bring them out of their storage crates in London to a new global audience.
The museum's collection was created by British explorer Alfred Maudslay who travelled to the Guatemalan jungle in the late 1800s with a mission to document the mighty Mayan civilisation that thrived in Central America for thousands of years.
Maudslay used what was then innovative plate glass photography techniques to capture the images, and casts of Mayan monuments, which have been held in storage at the British Museum for more than one hundred years.
It is now available to researchers and the public in the form of an extensive digital archive, augmented reality art pieces and 3D printed monoliths.
Objects from the museum's world collection - as well as VR tours and experiences - are available online. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
