- Story Text: An erupting volcano on Indonesian holiday island of Bali had hit tourism operators hard with many complaining that they have been suffering losses as peak season beckons.
On Bali's famous surf beach in Kuta, a surfboard rental vendor told Reuters his business has dropped by half since the eruption. To make it worst, a two-day airport closure earlier this week sparked fears among tourists, prompting future visitors to change their travel plan. One budget hotel said they have faced up to 90 percent of bookings cancellation this week.
Impact was especially resilient in the areas near erupting Mount Agung. Sitting on the east of the volcano, the town of Amed that was once bustling with holidaymakers is almost empty, visited by only a handful of local tourists.
In the mountainous area of Ubud, little impact was felt. New arriving tourist was excited to see the erupting volcano and restaurants and hotels have said they will go ahead to prepare for Christmas and New Year season.
Despite the significant drop, official from tourism association is hopeful that Bali will overcome the difficult situation, just like how it did after the terrorism attack 15 years ago.
The relatively small island has an outsized importance for Indonesian tourism. In January-September, Bali received 4.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, nearly half of the total 10.5 million arrivals in Indonesia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
