- Story Text: Pakistani authorities on Tuesday (December 5) torched more than 1.8 metric tonnes of prohibited drugs confiscated in 2017.
The Anti-Narcotics Force said the torched drugs included 1.225 tonnes of hashish, 212 kilograms of heroin, one kilogram of opium, as well as cocaine, amphetamine and contraband liquor.
Director General of Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), Major-General Musarrat Nawaz Malik said the burned drugs are valued at about $1 billion.
The ceremony in Islamabad was attended by foreign dignitaries, the country head of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and officials of law enforcement agencies.
Pakistani Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) officials say Pakistan attained the status of poppy-free country in year 2011, and is among the top three countries in global narcotic seizures. Afghanistan is the world's top producer of opium, from which heroin is made and which helps fund the Taliban's insurgency. Pakistani officials say about 70 percent of Afghanistan's drugs are smuggled through Pakistan and Iran, while the rest goes north through Central Asia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
