Dozens of Iraqis protested in Baghdad on Thursday (December 7) against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Protesters carried signs reading "Jerusalem is Arab" and vowed to return in greater numbers the following day after Friday prayers.
Head of Sunni Endowment in Iraq. Abdullatif al-Humaym described the decision as "reckless" and called on Iraqis to continue rallies and protests.
Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called on the Iraqi government to close the U.S. embassy in Baghdad or summon the ambassador and hand him a memo protesting the decision. He also called for an emergency meeting of all Iraqi, Arab and Islamic factions and warned Israel that Iraqi militias are capable of reaching its border through Syria.
A prominent Iraqi militia, the Iran-backed Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, have said Trump's decision could become a "legitimate reason" to attack U.S. forces in Iraq. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
