- Story Text:Distraught survivors and relatives of those caught in a fatal bombing in a news agency in Afghanistan on Thursday (December 28), which claimed 41 lives, picked through the blast debris for signs of their love ones.
The basement floors of the Afghan Voice agency were covered in blood following the suicide attack, which Islamic State had claimed responsibility for.
Many of the victims were students attending a conference, according to eyewitnesses. The attack occurred during a morning panel discussion on the 38th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Sunni-majority Afghanistan at the Tabian Social and Cultural Centre.
A journalist sitting on the second floor of the news agency targeted in the attack said he "heard a huge bang and the door hit my face." While another eyewitness said there appeared to have been more than one explosion during the attack, following an initial blast at the entrance to the compound housing the two offices. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
