This was due to diffuse hypoxic-ischemic damage, there was massive neuronal loss or death. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PINELLAS COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER JON THOGMARTIN SAYING: "Her vision centres of her brain were dead, therefore Mrs. Schiavo had what's called cortical blindness, she was blind, she could not see. No evidence of direct skull or brain trauma was seen. By what mechanism did Teresa Schiavo die? Post mortem findings, including the state of the body and laboratory testing showed that she died of marked dehydration. The state of her fatty tissue, and also the laboratory findings indicate that she did not starve to death.
