"For me, for the east end of London, for the whole of London, for the whole of England it's a proud moment. It's a very proud moment. Unfortunately we have to go to the airport now so we're going to have to leave everyone to party away the night, but it's been an incredible night, an incredible day, incredible experience for me personally and I'm very proud and very honoured to be part of a team like this where I'm a footballer at the end of the day. These are all athletes competing in the Olympics so to be walking into a team like this is a great honour. "Every one of the cities that was involved in this is put so much into this bid and of course Raul and me we are very good friends and we play in the same team, but Madrid is an amazing city. We live there, we know what it's like there and it's an incredible place to live" 3. BECKHAM AND WIFE LEAVING 4. VARIOUS OF GUESTS AT LONDON PARTY Initials Script is copyright Reuters Limited. London victory.
An exhilarated David Beckham, accompanied by his
wife Victoria, celebrated London's victory in winning the
2012 Olympic Games on Wednesday (July 6). A surprise
International Olympic Committee (IOC) vote declared the
city best suited to host the Games over Paris, which many
believed was placed to win.
"Very happy, very happy thank you," said Beckham.
"For me, for the east end of London, for the whole of
London, for the whole of England it's a proud moment. It's
a very proud moment. Unfortunately, we have to go to the
airport now so we're going to have to leave everyone to
party away the night, but it's been an incredible night an
incredible day, incredible experience for me personally and
I'm very proud and very honoured to be part of a team like
this where I'm a footballer at the end of the day. These
are all athletes competing in the Olympics so to be walking
into a team like this is a great honour," he said.
Paris had been the favourite throughout the bidding
process and its failure -- the third in 20 years -- left
French supporters floundering for an explanation.
Madrid, the third city to be eliminated, was also
confident of running a close race despite the fact that IOC
members had brought up questions over security and budget
issues during the delegation's presentation.
Beckham's captain and Real Madrid striker Raul, along
with a line-up of other Spanish stars, had been hopeful
Madrid would pull off a victory after hearing the city's
bid had led the voting after two rounds; but elimination
followed on the third.
After hearing of Raul's disappointment over the Spanish
capital's lost chance to host the 2012 Games, Beckham said
he sympathised and added that Madrid was a strong contender.
"Everyone of the cities that was involved in this is
put so much into this bid and of course Raul and me we are
very good friends and we play in the same team, but Madrid
is an amazing city. We live there, we know what it's like
there and it's an incredible place to live," he said.
The announcement was greeted with a huge roar in Singapore where
the British delegation set out to celebrate
for a few hours before it begins its journey back home to
London, where it is sure to be received by joyous fans and
supporters.
The five candidate cities were London, Paris, Madrid,
New York and Moscow. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
