Director Szabolcs Hajdu took the Grand Prix Crystal Globe for his film 'It's Not the Time of My Life' at the closing of the 51st edition of the Karlovy Vary international film festival on Saturday (July 9).
The winning film is a low-cost feature shot in the director's own home and featuring members of his own family and friends.
Appearing in his own film, Hajdu also won the award for best actor for his role in the movie.
"Our film is about two families and both families are behind me, more or less," Hajdu said. "We are very happy, this is truly a great surprise. It is a small show that we play in a small theatre of 50 seats in Budapest and we have made the film out of that with a very minimal budget and now here we have received the main award, and I got the best actor award, so everyone is very happy." he said after the closing ceremony.
Hajdu's film follows the story of two families who happen to temporarily share an unusual apartment.
The Festival President's Award went to American screenwriter and director, Academy Award winner Charlie Kaufman who thanked the judges on stage.
"I am very honored to have been granted this Award," he said.
Russian director Ivan Tverdovskiy's unusual romance film 'Zoology', about a woman who has grown a tail, won The Special Jury Prize; Slovenian director Damjan Kozole received the Best Director Award for his film 'Nightlife' and Zuzana Maurery took home Best Actress Award for the film 'The Teacher', which was directed by Jan Hrebejk.
The winners were chosen by the festival's five-member grand jury, which included Italian novelist Maurizio Braucci.
The 52nd edition of the festival, hosted in an historic spa town west of Prague, is due to take place June 30 - July 8, 2017. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
