- Story Text:Helio Castroneves led from start to finish to become
the first driver to win the CART Detroit Grand Prix in
consecutive years.
Castroneves, who recorded his first CART victory here
last year, won his second race of the season. He also took
the checkered flag on a similar road course in Long Beach,
California and won the IRL-sanctioned Indianapolis 500.
Sunday's victory was the fifth of his CART career, all on
road courses.
Scotland's Dario Franchitti was second, followed by
Brazil's Roberto Moreno, Andretti and another Brazilian,
Christian Fittipaldi. CART points leader Kenny Brack was
ninth.
There were numerous accidents in the race.
Alex Zanardi, who won this event in 1998, and Michel
Jourdain Jr. were knocked out on lap 4 when Zanardi cut off
the Mexican in turn 3, hitting Jourdain's front left wing and
sending both cars into the tire barriers. Neither driver was
injured.
Alex Tagliani of Canada went out on lap 41 when he took
turn 8 too wide and hit the tires. Tagliani was trying to
avoid French rookie Nicolas Minassian, who spun in the turn.
Brazilian rookie Bruno Junquiera, who started in the front
row alongside Castroneves, was forced out on lap 42 when his
transmission failed.
On lap 58, Spain's Oriol Servia lost control of his car
going into the casino turn and went into the tires, bringing
out the third full-course caution flag.
Bryan Herta went into the wall on lap 63, knocking him out
of the race. During the restart on lap 66, Moreno and Patrick
Carpentier of Canada brushed hard together but kept on racing. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
