- Story Text:South Korea's Bong-Ju Lee won the 105th Boston marathon
on Monday in an unofficial time of two hours 9 minutes and 42
seconds, ending a 10-year winning streak by Kenyan runners in
the world's oldest continuing marathon.
Ecuadoran Silvio Guerra was second, followed by Kenyan
Joshua Chelang'a. Chelang'a duelled Lee, a silver medalist at
the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, stride for stride to
approximately the 20-mile mark but was unable to keep pace and
eventually had to yield second place to Guerra. Guerra
finished in a time of 2:10:07 with Cheang'a clocking third in
2:10:29.
Catherine Ndereba of Kenya took the women's division in a
time of 2:16:47 with Malgorzata Sobanska of Poland finishing
in second place and Lyubov Morganova of Russia finishing third
in 2:19:22. Nicknamed "Catherine the Great," Ndereba has
slowed her pace only once, in 1997, to give birth to her
daughter, Jane.
Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa finished first in the men's
wheelchair division in a time of 1:25:12 with Louise Sauvage
of Australia finishing first for the women in 1:53:54. Rod
DeHaven of the United States finished sixth in 2:12:41,
becoming the first American to finish among the top 10 since
1994. More than 450,000 lined the streets of Boston to watch
the race.
