- Title: Pope warns of lack of compassion at open air mass as he ends Latin American trip
- Date: 21st January 2018
- Summary: (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) POPE FRANCIS, SAYING: "The problem is there are many non-citizens. Those who are half citizens or urban leftovers that are on the edge of our roads, who live on the edges of our cities without the necessary conditions to lead a dignified life and it hurts to see that often, among these human surpluses, are the faces of so many children and adolescents. Where the faces of the future are found." ALTAR (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) POPE FRANCIS, SAYING: "As Benedict XVI pointed out, the greatness of humanity is essentially marked by its relation to suffering and those who suffer. A society that does not manage to accept those who suffer and who is not able to contribute through compassion so that suffering is shared and internally borne, is a cruel and inhuman society." FAITHFUL LISTENING (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) POPE FRANCIS, SAYING: "(Jesus) has come to Lima to commit himself to all of us as a renewed antidote against the globalisation of indifference, because when faced with this love, one cannot remain indifferent." - Story Text:Pope Francis warned of lack of compassion for those suffering as he celebrated an open air Mass for more than 1 million people on Sunday (January 21), ending a trip to Chile and Peru marked by tough talk on political corruption but a backlash over what many see as his insufficient resolve to tackle sexual abuse in the Church.
Pope Francis referred to those living on the "edge of cities," adding it "hurts to see that often, among these human surpluses, are the faces of so many children and adolescents. Where the faces of the future are found".
He urged his followers to not be "indifferent" to the suffering of others.
In the final hours of his six-day visit to the two nations, Francis warned in improvised remarks that Latin America was in a deep crisis from corruption scandals, with politics in most countries "more sick than well". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
