Summary:On June 23 1963, President John F Kennedy arrived in West Germany at the start of a historic visit lasting four days. Tens of thousands of West Germans welcomed him as he drove to Bonn with the West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer at his side. The West Germans saw the visit as recognition of their position in the front line of the West's defences but it was in West Berlin that Kennedy scored his major impact.
