- Story Text:King Hussein of Jordan, back in hospital after
suffering a cancer-related relapse, is said to be entering a
difficult phase in his recovery, following two days of
intensive cancer treatment - including a bone-marrow
transplant - at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota.
With bone marrow donations from both his brother and sister,
King Hussein underwent a much needed transplant on Monday (February 1)
and Tuesday (February 2), following intensive chemotherapy.
" He is now entering a rather difficult phase, " said
Jordanian Ambassador to the United States, Marwan Muasher, "
where he would be very closely monitored by doctors to guard
against any complications that might arise."
The King, with his American wife at his side is said to be
holding up well."He has a fighting spirit which we have seen
all along his illness." said the Ambassador.
Only two weeks earlier, King Hussein had returned home to
Jordan, and a tumultuous welcome, after a six-month absence
for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer treatment at the Mayo
clinic. However, he quickly returned to the United States
after a relapse involving sporadic fevers and a low blood count.
His recovery is seen by world leaders as crucial to peace in the
Middle East.He has been a pivotal figure in the U.S-led search for
Arab-Isreali peace, having played a major part in maintaining stability
for over forty seven years in a fragile Arab region.
Before Hussein returned for extended surgery he named his son, Crown
Prince Abdullah, as the heir to his Jordanian throne. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS - SOURCE TO BE VERIFIED
