- Story Text: Syrian government's chief negotiator, Bashar al-Jaafari, on Friday (January 26) dismissed a document proposing changes to U.N.-led talks on the war-torn country as "totally unacceptable".
The document drawn up by the United States, Jordan, Britain, France and Saudi Arabia made recommendations to the U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura for what they called a "practical approach" to what would be a "slow" political process. No reference was made about Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's future in the document, an apparent recognition of his strong position in the conflict.
''The so-called informal paper about reviving the political process in Geneva about Syria, that is the title of the paper, this informal paper is totally unacceptable and it doesn't deserve the ink that it was written with because our people have not and will never accept a solution that is parachuted on them or that is carried on tanks," Jaafari, Syrian government's negotiator at the Vienna talks, told reporters.
The document leaked on Friday as the latest round of U.N.-led talks was underway in Vienna, and its authenticity was confirmed to Reuters by three diplomatic sources. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
