- Date: 15th February 2000
- Summary: NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (REUTERS- ACCESS ALL) (SOUNDBITE) (English) COLLETTE SAYING: "I did, I spoke to Knight who was the writer/director and we screamed down the phone at each other, I didn't speak to Hayley - I'll see him soon no doubt. (Reporter asks if number of nominations was a surprise). I think it's a surprise in that there wasn't any really great campaign from Disney and the movie itself did really well commercially and usually if a film does well in the box office it doesn't get the kind of recognition in that arena, and I think it proves yet again that there is no formulaic - not one formula to make a good film. It's a good story and people responded to it"

- Story Text: Australian actress Toni Collette began final rehearsals for her Broadway debut a day after she was nominated by the Motion Picture Academy for "Best Supporting Actress" for her role in the hit movie "Sixth Sense".
"Sixth Sense" picked up six Academy Award nominations this week, including one for Best Supporting Actress - Australian Toni Collette.
Collette is in New York in rehearsals for a new Broadway production where Reuters asked if the nominations would put any extra pressure on her opening night? "Ok, you've just scared the shit out of me, (laughs) I'm completely focused on the job, I wasn't expecting a nomination - I just live every day as it comes, and I'm completely flattered and shocked and it's wonderful, strange and amazing"
The film, about a little boy who can see and communicate with ghosts starring Bruce Willis, Collette and 11-year-old Haley Joel Osment, who plays an 8-year-old with an unusual gift was also nominated in the Best Picture and Director categories.
Collette called writer/director M.Night Syamalan after the Academy's announcement "I did, I spoke to Night who was the writer/director and we screamed down the phone at each other, I didn't speak to Hayley - I'll see him soon no doubt.
(Reporter asks if number of nominations was a surprise) I think it's a surprise in that there wasn't any really great campaign from Disney and the movie itself did really well commercially and usually if a film does well in the box office it doesn't get the kind of recognition in that arena, and I think it proves yet again that there is no formulaic - not one formula to make a good film. It's a good story and people responded to it".
Collette is busy rehearsing 'The Wild Party', based on Joseph Moncure March's syncopated tribute to jazz-mad Manhattan in the 20's.She plays "Queenie' who throws a party to end all parties. The musical also stars Earth Kitt and Mandy Patinkin and is due to open in April.
Before the "Sixth Sense" Collette was perhaps best known for her start turn in the role of Muriel Heslop in the 1994 hit film, "Muriels Wedding", for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. She also appeared as Many Slade - wife of glamrock star Brian Slade in the 1998 film "Velvet Goldmine".She starred as Harriet Smith in the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, and can be seen currently in the Australian film, "The Bosy" based on Gordon Graham's play.In the summer of 2000 she can been seen in the motion picture "Shaft", starting alongside Samuel L.Jackson. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
